Some 20,000 different species of butterfly are known, ranging from tiny species half an inch across, up to giant birdwings that may measure 9 inches in wingspan. Some species are fast, powerful flyers, whilst others barely manage to flap lazily from flower to flower.

Some species are colorful whilst others are camouflaged to blend with their surroundings. The wings vary from a metallic sheen to deeper, vibrant colors.
